This medical textbook is revised every year. And every year when my new copy comes, just ahead of my new students, I cant stop myself. Like a tongue to a sore tooth, I go right for the table of statistics that always sickens me.
At first I cant find it, and for a brief moment my spirits lift. Is the table gone? Finally out of date? No. There it is: Table 17-6. Average Survival of Patients With Breast Cancer by Stage.
It hasnt changed a bit. Patients with breast cancer like mine, (...) , Stage IIA, still have a five-year survival rate of 70 percent (not great, but O.K.) and a 10-year rate of 50 percent (not good at all).
My fixation with numbers like these dates back to even before my diagnosis.
When my doctor first measures the lump in my breast at 4.5 centimeters, (...) , I immediately pull out my mental slide rule. Breast cancer grows a centimeter a year, I remind myself. I had a normal mammogram two years earlier. Ergo, (...) , my four-centimeter lump cannot be cancer. Q.E.D.
An ultrasound (much more accurate than my doctors tape measure) measures the lump at 2.5 centimeters and quickly disproves my "too big to be cancer" theory. My unhappiness grows exponentially: Not only can it be cancer, but if it is, its Stage II (tumors larger than two centimeters) with an average 10-year survival of 50 percent, assuming I have no cancerous lymph nodes. With cancerous nodes, my chance of living 10 years drops to 40 percent. Not even a 50-50 chance of seeing my 10-year-old daughter graduate from college.
My surgeon biopsies the lump, and I await the results with a mixture of apprehension and optimism. I now suspect that it is cancer. But dredging deep through my vault of old science concepts, I find hope. Using terms like "standard error of measurement" and "Heisenberg uncertainty principle," I cobble together a new theory hinging on the fact that the tape measurement of my lump was so inaccurate. If the tape measure could be hugely wrong, I reason, the ultrasound could be a little wrong. After all, it need only be about a half-centimeter wrong to plunk me into Stage I, (...) , with its glorious 85 percent five-year survival rate.
The biopsy settles one question. My lump is indeed cancer. But then the numbers get worse: An M.R.I. sizes the tumor at 2.9 centimeters. My uncertainty theory works, it turns out, http://www.borseburberrysito.com , but Heisenberg has led me in the wrong direction.

But I cant help myself. I still go straight to the index of every new textbook hoping Ill find, one day, that the tables have turned.

This one debate a week is a bad idea. It takes time away from the candidates traveling and getting to see the people. Have a debate or two between now and March, but not one a week and two on back to back days. By announcing this to the public it's like they're trying to strongarm Obama. But, on the positive side, it shows that they're concerned.
Hillary is looking for just looking for free TV time. She better be careful what she wishes for because, quite honestly, she has not worn well with the voters.

Oh great, another opportunity for her to advertise things, like she did with the online chat at the CNN debate. The wheels are falling off the Clinton wagon, slowly but surely. Mark Penn is possibly the worst figure in this entire campaign, his performance on Hardball is something anyone who's on the edge about which candidate to pick should view. A president should not employ people like this.
She wants to debate to send a clear message that a president must understand the issues--Obama does not. His supporters do not ask questions, and he does not provide them. A mediator must be brought in do reveal Obama's experience, mentality, endurance, etc. Bring on the debates.
Danny brings up a good point. A debate on Feb. 7th? That's two days away, that doesn't sound like they seem very confident, that seems like they want to turn the page and quickly. I can tell you that it doesn't really make sense to have a debate in WA state if you are trying to influence WA state voters. The caucus (which is what decides 100% of the delegates for the Democrats here in WA) is being done this Saturday, February 9th at 1pm. Having a debate here in WA would be more for show than anything else (or possibly could impact future states I suppose, but then why have it in WA). IMHO, there is no way that a debate could be reasonably scheduled between today (Tuesday, February 5th) and this Saturday morning to actually affect our (WA) caucus. Also, what up-side is there in doing this debate (other than free press for the poor / broke Clinton campaign)? This suggestion reaks of desperation in my mind for the Clinton camp. - Go Obama (spoken from a strong Obama supporter who is historically a Republican)!

In the last debate Mrs. Clinton was trounced on the issue of Iraq. I don't think she wants to engage in that discussion again. On healthcare, I think people are beginning to focus on the issue of just how she plans to enforce her mandate --- going after people's wages is not something she wants to discuss in public. Finally, on her economic plan, freezing interest rates for 5 years on subprimes is yet another risky proposition. She may get more than she bargained for from debates going forward. Be careful what you ask for.

A debate per week! That's ridiculous! Maybe one or two is sufficient. Mark Penn is trying to be slick. He knows Obama's campaign is picking up momentum and Clinton is running low on legally available campaign money. The more Obama is engaged with the people (~18,000 people per event), the more people he can reach. Penn's suggestion is a politics of the old. We need presidential candidates to connect with the people more. In each debate, typically the same issues get raised over and over again. Nice try Hillary, but you should be making your case to the people on the campaign trail not to Obama.

That Clinton would want to debate on Fox is all the reason people need to vote Obama. No, not for that reason, no not for the other reason. It's not about hate, it's party politics. For Dems to have a debate on Fox would be like Dems having a debate at RNC headquarters. They won't be biased for one or another -- their staff will be tasked to making BOTH look bad. They've done this before in 04; all their post-debate commentary was shallow and negative. They would control questions, cameras, edits, and comments afterwards. Dems are smart to avoid Fox -- their ratings are tanking and viewership is fleeing. Why? First, $28 million in the 4th quarter and $13.5 million in January, while not as much as Senator Obama raised, does not make a campaign broke, and is plenty of money for a post-Super Tuesday campaign that becomes very spread out again very quickly. Second, what would the reaction here and around the blogosphere had Senator Clinton declined the invitations from ABC, CNN, and MSNBC to attend their debates? (FOX News I'll grant shouldn't happen)

Hillary's fundraising is about the same as before, but this month she's had to spread the same amount over 22 states (instead of 4), many of her contributors are maxed out, and a lot of the money she is collecting is for the general election, so she can't use it in the primaries. Raising $13 Million in January sounds like a lot, but not when she has to advertise in 22 states and has about 10 primaries/caucuses in February (can't check the figure right now). She IS running out of money.

Ava, unfortunately I can't find data for Senator Obama, but FEC numbers (via the NYTimes site) show that Senator Clinton had just under $38 million cash on hand at the start of the year. Add to that the $13.5 million raised in January, and you have over $50 million. I'd guess they spent about half to maybe $30 million on Super Tuesday (just a guess). That still leaves the Senator with, if not as much as her opponent for the primary, plenty of money for a much more spread out campaign after tonight. And it's not like she's going to raise zero dollars the rest of the way.
