Not Supreme Court worthy to say the least, but some significant gravitas nevertheless. And Palin? A BS in journalism from Idaho State, two terms in the Wasilla city council followed by two more as mayor, president of the Alaska Conference of Mayors, ethics commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, and finally two years as governor of Alaska. Let's remember, Jesse Ventura was also once a governor who "took on the system" and had high approval ratings. People want to link Palin's lack of experience to that of Obama's perceived lack of experience. Here's the difference: Obama was chosen through a democratic process, his one "individual" choice in picking Biden shows judgment. McCain was chosen through that same democratic, we the people process and his one, lone choice shows lack of judgment at best, arrogance at worst. So, this election is STILL about judgment. Let's nip the "executive experience" canard in the bud. Running a town of 7,000 for four years and being governor of the 47th least populous state for 18 months does not count as the sort of executive experience necessary to be President of the United States. Being President isn't just about management and delegation. It's about grasp of national and international affairs. It's about having a vision for the country. No doubt that McCain, Obama and Biden have established a national profile and have staked out and defended their visions for the country. Palin has not. Running a small-scale entity does not compensate for this disengagement from national issues (she didn't even have a position on Iraq recently).

I ahve a PhD in Geophysics and a rather high IQ, and I am smart enough to clearly understand that my acedemic achievements do not qualify me to be POTUS. The problem I have is that this decision (and the knee jerk reaction to Georgia) have made me afraid for America's future again. After McCain won the primary I supported Obama but felt either of them would be signifigantly better than today. Unfortunately, this pick has suggested to me that McCain has lost his mind. Not only does it make him a hypocrite on the experience issue but it moves us from an attempt at being a centerist to pivoting to the hard far right. I'm pleased we'll pass a barrier either way this fall but sometimes you can do the right thing in the wrong way.

Actually I watched an interview with Palin last night done by CNN and the woman has her act together. Just read TPM and it said that she appointed the reviewing group which tells me that they will come back that she is exonerated. The other thought I had was that maybe she is a trial ballon and she could easily back out saying she really feels the position would take time about from her baby and then he could pick someone like Huckabee who would still get the base. My more conspiratory mind was thinking why did he pick her. Some people will think she just doesn't look presidential in the event that would happen (even though it would be extremely biased, but that is how a lot of people choose). Maybe those like Rove who are in on the game plan are setting McCain up once again saying she would be a good pick, hope he loses and put the person they want in to run in 4 years thinking that Barack will fail. He is going to have a lot of cleanup that doesn't happen overnight. I know the response will be the Rove told him to pick Romney. Do we really know what goes on in Rove's head? I know the mantra is that we don't know Barack, but she only has 2 months for people to get to know her and I think on a national scale if some people have the perception that she does not look presidential enough there is not enough time for her to show people that. Just some random thoughts.

George Bush also had executive experience as a governor. So did so many other people that I would never wnat to see as prsident. Women on the streets and basically everywhere has compelling life stories just like or even more than Palin.

If you'e playing the executive card then you just played it against McPain too. While Obama was passing sweeping ethics reform legislation in the Senate that has forced McPain to show and pay for his plane rides aboard the Hensley corporate jet, Mayor Palin was making sure the city had enough bunting for celebrity grandstand at the start of the Iditarod.

The few posters supporting this decision here don't seem to get the issue. Paley is completely unvetted. No one knows a thing about her. I defy someone to even tell me what her position is on the invasion of Iraq. What about the Bush tax cuts? Social Security? Health care? Medicare? Immigration? The use of military force generally? Diplomacy? The Georgian crisis? Afghanistan? Pakistan? China? Equal pay for women? Family leave? Etc. In other words, all of the issues people have listed as important in this election. We don't know her position on almost any of them. And McCain only met her once before he made the pick. That's ridiculous. Japanese papers rely much more on home subscriptions than ads for revenue. But ad revenue has plunged in the wake of the global economic crisis.
"In some cases, links to individual stories could lead to stories being manipulated for a purpose other than journalism, for example to promote a certain stock," the Nikkei said. "There is a danger this could inaccurately affect financial markets."
The Nikkeis daily subscription base is just above three million, 50 percent more than the biggest American business daily, The Wall Street Journal. The Journal also charges for full access to its Web site, but it does not ban linking.
For now, the print-focused strategy seems to have helped the industry. Newspapers here have lost relatively few of their print subscribers in the last decade, despite a surge in Japanese Internet users. Statistics show that at least one daily newspaper is still delivered for every household in Japan.
