They get most of the questions, have had all the face time to speak of (Alan Keyes was right about that, at least, if nothing else), and those that are left (Hunter, Tancredo, Paul, (not Keyes, he's not serious and never has been, and while Paul might be a bigger flake, he's held office and has a record and is a legitimate candidate) et al) barely get a minute or two, only get questions that bring out their main issue (illegal immigration, which all the main candidates are weak on according to their own records, and this is the biggest topic of concern for most Americans, especially when you realize it's a national security issue), and don't get time to show people that they have both experience and opinions very mainstream to theirs on all other subjects, like spending, etc. When you hear Hunter, or Tancredo, or Paul for that matter, talk about spending, they sound conservative, while the main five (Romney, Guliani, McCain, Thompson, Huckabee) are all liberals on spending, with the possible exception of Thompson. Personally, I feel like the Republicans are being screwed because the media is giving the Republican election to those five people by giving them all the attention. I like some things about all the candidates, but not everything about any of them. Huckabee rose quickly because I think a lot of Republicans sort of felt the same in that regard. However, I don't see a lot of depth to him. As I'm learning about his record, he's looking more like a candidate that is more interested in working with Dems than pushing a conservative agenda. What he did with the Mexican consulate is counter to what any conservative would do and just welcomed in illegals. He is also very weak on energy and foreign policy. I can't support McCain after the gang of 14, campaign finance reform, and his support for that awful comprehensive immigration reforom bill even though he has ben tough on the war. I am most alligned with Thompson, however, he was a Senator, like Clinton and Obama. We need someone with executive experience. For me that leaves Romney. I think he will be great on spending and taxes and strong enough on border security and defense. My only major disappointment with him is that he seems to believe that global warming is man made, at least in part. I don't know if this is just because of the huge downside to saying he thinks its all bull. If he did, that would be the only thing they focus on. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any of the other candidates being very strong on this issue either. So I guess I'm still undecided with a nod towards Romney or perhaps Thompson.

Kucinich holds elective office, has at least some support (at least as much as Dodd and Biden, both of whom were there)and has appeared in almost every other debate. But he strongly articulates a leftist agenda, which is very popular with a significant wing of the Democratic party and therefore embarrasses the Democratic frontrunners. It forces them to either agree (and marginalize themselves in the general election) or disagree (and lose face with the hard left, which is so important to their fundraising and the voting totals in several major states). John - As a Romney guy myself, I agree with your analysis. Mitt isn't perfect, he is the best of what we have to choose from this time around. The other candidates have their strong points and a few of them I would argue are actually stronger than Mitt in a few areas (McCain on defense for example.) But in terms of offering a complete package or tool set of skills, experience, talent, personal values, and the candidates intentions for taking the country in a particular direction; I'll give the nod to Romney.
Mitt's biggest weakness in my view is that he seems to have a bit too much of a internatinal/global view of the world in terms of economics. I am a strict, hard-core "America First" kind of a guy. I don't appreciate our technologies being sold to companies outside our control to people who do not have the US Constitution as their first object of loyalty. I don't appreciate our diplomats negotiating trade deals that give our businesses more hoops to jump through than foreign businesses. So if Mitt does become the nominee and ends up winning this thing, then I hope someone gives him a primer on such American hallmarks as Nationalism and Militarism. He needs to lead --whoever wins needs to lead-- with strength and intimidation to re-assert the hard won US hegemony that has been squandered.

Mike did it. He was only the SECOND Republican since the RECONSTRUCTION to become the Governor of Arkansas. During his 10 years as Governor, he actually began to bring about real CHANGE in our state. He didn't raise ANY taxes that weren't voted on by the PEOPLE of Arkansas... and might I mention a somewhat little touted fact... ARKANSAS has NO DEFICIT. Arkansas is a debt free state. During Mike's tenure as Governor, we saw major overhauls in our public education system, (...) , highways, and health care. I am certainly not an advocate of a nationwide social health care system by ANY means, but he did help to get health care for Arkansas CHILDREN, which was desperately needed. And as far as his "coercing" the Parole Board to release DuMond... (which I, quite frankly, am sick of hearing about) I can tell you right now that they didn't say they were coerced into releasing him when it actually happened. Quite the opposite. The Democratic Machine in Arkansas is corrupt, and they'll say anything to keep from seeing Huckabee elected as the GOP nominee. Our whole state knows first hand what Huckabee can do... the Democrats are afraid of him. And those of you who say he can't be elected, or that he is just another politican... you underestimate who he really is, and what he has done.
I just understand people when they say Huckabee is the "conservative" alternative to Giuliani. Look at his stands on crime (let's people out of jail if they are born again), terrorism, foreign policy, taxes, spending, environmental issues...He is one of the most left-leaning guys out there. Except for his stands on gay marriage and abortion will someone explain how this guy is considered conservative? In addition, he's got all that baggage with respect to all his ethics problems in Arkansas. We an do better than this one trick pony.

I haven't really seen a debate so far this year. When everyone spouts the same things that's not a debate. With the exception of Ron Paul and possibly Tancredo, the other guys are spouting the same thing. There is no need for another debate, in my honest opinion. It's just the same old same old.
Folks, take a look at Ron Paul's stand on issues. Just google his name and you will find his site. He is the only republican that would get us out of this no-win war that has cost us over 300 billion dollars (some estimates are over 1 trillion dollars!). He is the only one of the top 5 to take a tough stance on illegal immigration. He is the only one that will truly give us smaller government and insure our constitutional rights. They should try a Lincoln/Douglas style debate next time. Let each candidate debate just one of the other candidates at random. Throw out one or two of the major topics of the campagn and let them show us what they are made of and what they truely believe and stand for. Then we could really decide which one would make the best Leader for our country. Hopefully, my good Republican neighbors over in Iowa will have the good sense to ignore the (always left-leaning) Des Moines Register "debate" and make their decision based on the history of each candidate instead. If they choose unwisely, then either Team Clinton or Oprah's friend Barack will be our president for the next eight years. The GOP no longer represents its traditional base. It cannot raise money. The party has no effective leaders. Bush has been a disaster. None of the main candidates are being forthright or honest. Only Ron Paul, Tancredo, and Hunter speak their minds and hearts and the media ignores them. Tancredo is a one-note Johnny, and no one is listening to Hunter. While Paul has attracted considerable followers from across the political spectrum, but the mainstream media almost completely ignores him or else belittles him and his supporters. Paul may be a bit out there on some subjects, but he is consistent, (...) , (...) , forthright, open, and honest about his views. That in itself is refreshing and from which stems his support. That he can garner so much supporter-generated enthusiasm speaks loudly about the sorry state of today's GOP. So many people are sick of nearly aspect of our government and those who run it. There are only two candidates who can actually win the Presidency coming from the Republican Party. They are Rudy Guiliani and Mitt Romney. I like things about the other candidates but here is why they can not win. Huckabee- Independents will not vote for a preacher, he will be painted as a "religious wacko" whether correct or not, and socially he is too Liberal on Crime and Illegal Immigration to insure mainline Conservative support that he would have to have. McCain backed Amnesty for Illegals. He is a good man but that destroyed his shot. This election WILL be about illegal immigration. Thompson can not overcome his slow start and Independent Northerners are not going to support a drawling Southerner after Bush, no matter how much sense he makes. Ron Paul is just a tool, both literally and figuratively. He has some real supporters but many of his "supporters" are Liberals who have no intention of voting for him, they just use him as a way to submit their anti Iraq War vitriole into the Republican debate. The real Paul voters should wake up to this fact and understand his unelectability. That leaves Guiliani and Romney. They are both Northerners, which this election is a plus. But the one thing the Republican will need this year is the ability to raise money quickly. Like many I have not donated as I want to see what direction the Republican nomination will go. I believe between the two Guiliani has too many non-conservative skeletons in his closet, and most would question his commitment on Illegal Immigration. Mitt Romney is a Mormon...so what? He is still a Social and fiscal Conservative and that is what will be the most important thing to Republicans and Independents during the general election. If the best Liberals can say is that he hired a company to do his yard work that employed illegals, they are going to look silly, when compared to their open border policy. He does not have to worry about raising money at the beginning of the race. He has plenty. That is a bigger issue than many believe. That is why I have decided to support Mitt Romney as the most electable Republican.
DocNeaves - Paul is a flake? You have got to be kidding. Unelectable maybe, but a flake? He is by far the most honest candidate in both parties. He has the most consistent voting record. Is by far the most conservative. He hasn't been bought by anyone and is the most transparent in every possible way. How do you define "flake?" I agree that there is no way he can win and America just doesn't have the fortitude for that level of truth and reality, but calling Paul a flake is an interesting use of the word as I understand it.
Romney is the best candidate to will in the general. He has executive experience in both government as a governor and in the business world. I know there are concerns from social conservatives but Romney is a very smart man and he is smart enough to know where his bread is buttered and will go out of his way to keep social conservatives happy. He will select conservative judges for the courts, he will keep ?don?t ask don?t tell? as a military policy etc, etc going down the list of conservative issues keeping them intact. Romney is smarter then Bush politically and will not stray off the conservative path. One of the main reasons he will be great for the General election is moderates and even some liberals would not be afraid to vote for him. If someone like Huchabee gets the node you can plan on not getting any moderates or fence setters and it will be an ugly fight all the way. Face reality 35% Constrictive 35% Liberal and 30% independent voters in this country. Both parties are fighting over the 30% independent and you must look at not who you want the most but which candidate are most likely appeals to the 30% independent moderate voter. Both parties are fighting this battle for Liberals you can not choose the most liberal candidate or you will lose. You must select the candidate that can get the most independent votes that leans to the lift. For the Conservatives the same is true you can not select the most conservative candidate or you will lose. You must select the candidate that can get the most independent votes that leans to the right. This is why there is always something you do not like about every candidate, when the candidate tries to appeal to the 30% independent voter in irritates you. You need to wake up to the real world and accept it and vote for a candidate that has the best chance of winning the General election.

sean - I just listed a half dozen, and pointed you to a nazi/White supremacist link that actively solicits donations for paul. Again, he has never either disavowed this support or turned down the money it generates for him. I find it nearly impossible that someone who is not racist would just let this sit without any disclaimer. Incidentally, paul also voted against re-authorizing the voting rights act, which protected Black citizens when they voted. And he published overtly racist material in the newsletter he used to publish. You may like some of ron paul's positions and appreciate his direct answers, but that does not cover for the racism and naziism that he has no problem being in bed with.
In response to the Anon. poster who was responding to DocNeaves: I, too, do not think Ron Paul is a flake. In fact, I do think he is an honest man and a good person. But I do have a number of things that I do not agree with him on. First, I don't like his foreign policy stance, of bringing America home from Iraq ASAP. It would end up being a flippin' mess over there, and I don't think we should do that. Also, he has some good points about abolishing a number of Federal agencies, but I think the American public and our society in general is not prepared for the consequences of such an act. I think that proposal is too radical. I think we should scale back government programs gradually instead of lopping off large chunks of it in one fell swoop. I basically think some of his libertarian views are just too extreme. But overall, I do think he is a good man, not a flake.

Concerning Ron Paul again...I don't think he is electable as President. But I have wondered how he would work as a V.P. pick. There might be a lot of moderates and independants who might be swayed to the GOP ticket if he were on the ballot. I used to think Huckabee would be a good V.P. choice, but now...I don't think so. This is the story of the consumer who is seduced and conditioned by the tales of the marketing merchant. Yes it's something that with the right parameters in place leads us to make decisions that are really not in our better long term interests. You see it in the major department stores during the post new year sales where people not only forget their manners but are downright violent and aggressive in pushing and shoving to get to that all important consumable which is selling at a seemingly impossible discounted price.
It was only on the news recently that a particular and now most unpopular person bought a boat load of very cheap air conditioners from China and went on a rampage akin to a travelling fire sales road show, through the outback country towns and sold these units like hotcakes. They were so cheap that these good country people bought them like bananas. Not just one at a time, but in bunches. The sales pitch told what they wanted to hear and with the prospect of a free lunch (well almost) threw their discerning minds aside and put on their sheep’s coats to be led like lambs to the slaughter.

I am often bewildered by how easily people are mislead with the marketing hype that colours their perception. I include myself as well, knowing all too well of having bought things that were not as they seemed. Several products come to mind where plenty of money had been spent on an extensive marketing which included $1000+ advertisements in high profile glossy magazines. It seems crazy that given a choice, people would rather pay for the marketing glamour of a high profile product name of average quality than for a low profile product of high quality. This is especially so if the product has celebrity endorsement and at what cost!
Seemingly an increasing number of products are no longer made to a quality standard and are having this standard cheapened by price constraints. The economic rationalism of cutting costs at all costs so as to remain competitive. Is this a product of deception or is it driven by an insatiable consumer demand of wanting to pay the least and blindly expecting the best? Price does not always reflect quality either and sometimes paying more does not necessarily equate to improved quality. It’s a mine-field out there, (...) ! One needs to be cautious, do their homework and use their common sense. It makes me realise that not much has changed since the latin phrase "caveat emptor" was coined, let the buyer beware!
So the next time you look at purchasing something see if you can be the first person in recorded history to break this psychological phenomenon by becoming more discerning in your product purchase. If the product is heavily marketed then those costs (which can be as high as 30-50% of overall costs) will have to be reflected in the price. If they are not then ask yourself, how can this product still be reasonably priced if it is so extensively marketed? By now I would think you know the answer to that one, do you not?
